But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? - Romans 10:14 (NLT)
Few things strike fear in the heart of the Christ-follower like being asked to “witness” or participate in an evangelistic event. Trust me, I get it! One of the most debilitating anxiety attacks I ever experienced was when I knew beyond a doubt that the Holy Spirit was thrusting me forward to witness to an international student on my campus. Regrettably, I allowed the fear to win out, and I grieved over that decision for a long time. Even now, its memory propels me forward in a commitment to seize any opportunity the Lord places before me to share his love and message with others. As I cried and prayed for the individual of whom I walked right past, never to see again, the Lord reminded me that “I have nothing to lose, but that individual potentially has everything to lose.” I was not asked to embrace that endeavor alone, nor was it about me, my abilities or the right words.
Through the years, I have equipped myself with a myriad of witnessing tools, and I have worked diligently to get my personal story down to an art, regardless of how much time would be afforded. While these efforts are not in vain, the years and the kindness of Jesus have taught me that there are elements of greater importance and often have a greater impact.
We do not have to look far to see that people all around us are hurting, broken, defeated, and alone. So many desperately need hope, to know that they are not forgotten or not abandoned.
It is into this world that Jesus invites us. Just like his invitation to a young fisherman, he invites us to follow him first … and he will show us how to fish for people (Matthew 4:19).
How can you and I have any impact on another’s life? How can we bring clarity, offer hope, demonstrate kindness, or help others find healing? It starts by following Jesus and allowing his love to flow unrestricted through us.
While I am quite certain there are many factors that shape a skilled “fishermen,” there are a few lessons that I have learned from Jesus along the way.
Be Respectful — People are not projects. They are individuals dearly loved by God, and he is entrusting them into our care.
Be Available — Be willing to step into another person’s world. Then be a conduit of God’s love and grace.
Be Present — If you are a Christ-follower, the Spirit of Jesus dwells in you; therefore, that same Spirit enters every situation or the individual’s life.
Be a Good Listener – This will be your greatest tool. Listen for misconceptions of Jesus. Has this individual previously been hurt by “Christians” or the Church? What are the roadblocks and obstacles? Seek to understand, and pray the Holy Spirit will give you discernment and wisdom in your response.
PRAY! – Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ to be bold, courageous and caring. Pray for those who have not yet received Christ. Pray for your friends, neighbors, family, co-workers … whomever the Lord places in front of you. Pray for yourself—that you will be ready, respectful, available, and a good listener.
Now, go fishing!
