Encounter: The Widow at the Treasury
Scripture: Luke 21:1-4 NLT
While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins. “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”
Prayer:
Father in heaven,
When I give out of surplus I am acting out of self-dependence—my work, my income, my abilities. But when I give sacrificially like the widow, I am fully dependent on you. My self-dependence pushes you out of the center of my life and replaces you with a focus on getting more and having more, which leads to ungratefulness and discontentedness. It’s not about my financial status; it is about my dependence status. When I give more than what is easy, I trust in you for provision which draws me closer to you. Let me be rich in faith in you, and generously sacrificial with the resources you’ve given me.
Amen.
