Devotional | Lindsey Haugen | Jan 31, 2021
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And He is before all things, and in him all things hold together … And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him. - Colossians 1:15-17, 21-22 (ESV)
I love how the classic hymns take you on a journey. From start to finish, a story is unfolding and the final verse and chorus always bring it home! This is one of the things we love about our new song, “He Is.” The song presents a story of Christ’s perfect love from the beginning of time until the day he died and rose again.
We set out to write a song about who Christ is. What does the Bible tell us about the person of Christ? One theme that kept coming to the surface was the clear contrast between our imperfection and Christ’s perfection.
The perfectionistic culture we find ourselves in today is detrimental, to say the least. Perfectionism is driven primarily by internal pressures, such as the fear of making mistakes, avoiding failure, receiving harsh judgment, and ridiculously high expectations. According to Psychology Today, perfectionistic tendencies have increased substantially among young people over the past 30 years.
Well, spoiler alert—no human on earth is EVER going to be perfect.
But Jesus was and is perfect, and he paid the eternal price for us. He did this in the hope that we could perhaps, one day, lay down our burdens of perfectionism, failures, and wrongdoings and walk in the fullness of Christ.
In this song, we started at the beginning of creation. When Christ, seated with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, saw what would unfold with humanity and knew what had to be done and when it had to be done. “Through his great devotion, he set a plan in motion.” And now, our faith is the product of that great love and devotion.
We pray through “He Is” that you’ll find the comfort of Christ’s love and see it woven throughout the history of mankind … that you’ll see his great plan unfolding and you’ll believe in the healing power of his great love … that you’ll read Paul’s words in Colossians and truly believe that while you were once alienated because of your failures, you are now reconciled to God through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross 2,000 years ago … and that you’ll come to terms with the fact he is perfect so you don’t have to be.
Lord, may we find comfort in the cross. May we find comfort in the gift of your love, and may we lay down any fears of failure and walk in the forgiveness and freedom you so mercifully give us. Thank you for seeing the beginning and end of every story from the beginning of creation, and for finding a way to save us from ourselves. We love you. Amen.

I am not perfect but He is
No greater love like this exists
Through His great devotion
He set a plan in motion
Because of His sacrifice we live
Blameless He walked where we live
The king of kings forever
Became a humble servant
He is, our present Hope and Savior
The One who rolled the stone away
He is life eternal
Hallelujah, Christ He Is
We are not perfect but He is
He died on the cross while innocent
As the nails broke through him
He said “please forgive them”
No one is perfect but He is
Death couldn’t hold Him in the end
The tomb forever empty
Oh God, you are worthy
Because of Your sacrifice we live
