For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10
Magnum opus is probably not a term we hear thrown around too often. It’s the culmination of someone’s life work—a creation that encompasses every moment of triumph and failure. It’s the result of years and years of practice and perfected craft. While all their previous work may have been good, it pales in comparison to what they've accomplished now. Think of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, or Taylor Swift's album Red.
The first five words in Ephesians 2:10 remind us of something incredibly important: You are uniquely and carefully designed. Just like master craftsmen who patiently and painstakingly shape each unique and purposeful detail of their work, so God has created you. You are his masterpiece, and no part of you is a mistake. You are the greatest work God has done.
The creator of the universe and all the things that inhabit it calls YOU his masterpiece. Let that sink in for a moment. God’s creation is filled with so much beauty and splendor that we can hardly step outside without thanking and appreciating him. Consider the splendid colors of a beautifully blended sunset or the breathtaking views from a mountaintop, overlooking everything the eye can see. All these beautiful things pale in comparison to you.
God knows every intricate detail about you, all your habits and hang-ups. He has seen you at your strongest moments and your weakest, at your times of high triumph and moments of low despair. The great “I Am” looks at you and says, “You are my magnum opus, my greatest work, my masterpiece.”
Not only are we a masterpiece, but we are a masterpiece created for good things. Christ created us anew so that those incredibly good things (the Bible doesn't throw around the word "good" lightly) that God planned long ago can now be carried out by us. We are a masterpiece created to do good accomplished through Christ.
PRAYER
Thank you, Father, for creating me. Help me to truly understand that I am not a mistake, but your masterpiece—uniquely and wonderfully made. May I live out the purpose you have for me and do the good things you planned long ago. Amen.
