Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 6:13-18
The song, “Jesus,” serves as a reminder and encouragement to all that his name, Jesus, is our greatest weapon in any battle we face. It can be so easy to focus on the hardships that surround us. Maybe the loss of a loved one, health concerns, job insecurities, tension in a relationship, a haunting memory from our past, what we see on the news, etc. These are all things we may face with anxiety, and they may bring up questions we can’t answer.
However, Jesus, the Prince of Peace, lets us know in Isaiah 41:10 we don’t have to face these trials alone. He says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” If we lean into him, he will help us see the path ahead and guide us on which direction to take at the fork in the road … even when it feels like a dead end.
The lyrics in the first and second verses of “Jesus” really focus in on this truth and encourage us that when we do call on his name, he only needs to use a small piece of his strength to help us. What is big to us is so small to our Mighty God. In John 16:33, Jesus says, “I have told you these things so that you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Doesn’t that verse give you chills? He has overcome the world! How can any problem in front of us be too big for him? Simply put, it can’t. All we need to do is speak his name: Jesus. He is right here. He is with us.
Sometimes we can get caught up in trying to say the most perfectly-worded prayer; however, there is power in his name alone. He knows what is on our hearts. If we aren’t able to get the words out, that is okay. Just call out his name. Jesus.
Do you have a situation in your life you keep trying to fight alone? Maybe a couple of them?
Just as the chorus of the song says, “He has the victory every time.”
So let us put on that full armor of God described in Ephesians 6:13-18 and mentioned in the bridge of this song. Let us stand firm in our faith and knowing no matter what we are facing, it is never too big for Jesus.
Dear Lord, as we may lift our hands to praise your name, let us also lift up our fears and anxious thoughts to you. They may be too heavy for us alone, but they are never too heavy for you. We pray for your wisdom, peace, and strength over our hardships as we call on your name. Remind us that you are always with us in every battle. Thank you, Jesus.
Amen.
You come and fight my battles
When I’m too weak to draw my own sword
You come with your army of angels
When evil tries to break down my doors
You have the victory
Everytime, everytime
Oh and when my eyes can’t see
You shine your light, shine your light
And there's no darkness you can’t touch
In you I’ll put all of my trust
All I do is speak your name
Jesus
As I begin to tremble
You help me up saying don’t be afraid
Your spirit lives inside of me
You’ll uphold me with a piece of your strength
I’ll take up the shield of faith
And never be the same
Let all the flaming arrows be
extinguished in your name
Because you have the victory
