“Now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.” Corinthians 13:12
When my husband was a youngster in elementary school, he noticed he was having a hard time seeing the board in school. Continual squinting during his classes led to a visit to the eye doctor. The eye doctor then fitted him with glasses which improved his vision. When he became a teenager, his eye doctor fitted him for contact lenses to continue to sharpen his vision. In his mid-50s in yet another change with age, his reading became difficult and reading glasses were added for vision. There were lots of changes over the years to improve his vision.
In a similar manner, my spiritual vision has changed as I have grown older. As a child, I was introduced to God and Jesus through Bible stories and Christmas programs. Youth groups and camps helped me through my teenage years, filled with both hope and fear, and helped me grow my faith and see Jesus more clearly. During my adult years, study, prayer, meditation, and reflection have refined my vision, allowing me to see more clearly God’s world and my role in God’s kingdom. Again, lots of changes over the years to improve my spiritual vision and path with Jesus.
In Corinthians 13:1, we read “Now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.”
Just as the eye doctor sharpens a person’s vision with glasses and contact lenses, Jesus sharpens our vision and focus through our daily prayers, his Word, worship gatherings, serving, and Bible study. To grow, to change, to open our eyes and hearts, and to see our place in his work, we must have a desire to see more clearly and be open to the changes coming our way. Whether it’s a physical change, a relationship change, a work change, or a spiritual change– let us continually be open to change and to see what the Lord has in store for us. Let us strive to see more clearly.
The Lyrics of the song “Eyes on Jesus” by Scott Willis sum it all up:
Keep my eyes on Jesus
See the world as he sees it.
Focus on the people, trying hard to live each day
That’s how we’ll build the kingdom, bringing hope to those who need it.
Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus. And he’ll show us the way.
Lord, keep our eyes on you. Let us see you clearly every day and be open to the changes you have in store for us as we continue to grow, sharpen our faith, and build your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
