“God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” —1 John 4:16
We need God to love God and to love others. When we place our trust in Jesus and declare him Lord of our lives, Jesus promised us his very own presence, the Holy Spirit. This advocate gives us the strength we need to have successful and thriving relationships. Without the Holy Spirit, I know I would fall short in loving and supporting my husband, taking care of my two daughters, and showing up for my friends. It is true that love is a choice, but I cannot always make that choice on my own or in my own power. I need the Holy Spirit to soften my heart when it feels impossible to love. I need the Holy Spirit to open my eyes and show me what is most important. I need the Holy Spirit to speak and remind me of the truth in my moments of weakness. I need the Holy Spirit to convict me and lead me into repentance. In this place, we are met by the kindness and love of our merciful Father. None of us are perfect and no relationship is perfect, but the good news is God already knew that and provided a way for us to look and be like him. May we be obedient and open to him, our ultimate example of love.
PRAYER
Jesus, we acknowledge our need for you. Empower us by your Holy Spirit to love like you love us. Give us grace for the people we see daily. We confess that we don’t always see them the way you see them, as your beloved children. Give us your Kingdom perspective and remind us of what a blessing it is to get to love and be loved. Help us to hear your voice more clearly and be quick to listen. We love you, Lord. Amen.
