“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Like a lot of women I know, becoming a mother has transformed the way I see the world. I love children, because they have a natural curiosity and fearlessness that is wonderful to experience!
When my son was very little, he proudly showed me a picture he drew in school. He was bubbling with excitement as he told me, “Mommy! We live on the Earth!” I shared in his joy and amazement at something so simple. These moments of motherhood have filled my heart, and given me a new appreciation for the world around me. Things I often take for granted, I get to see again with new eyes as my children grow and learn and mature.
Developing a new perspective means we gain a clarity we didn’t have before. It can be life changing. And isn’t that the way of parenting? Once I had children, my thoughts and feelings about a lot of issues were put to the test. Becoming a mother fundamentally changed my outlook. No longer was I living only for myself. I put my children’s needs first and prioritized their safety and security. I grew closer to God and felt the weight and responsibility of caring for another human being. It was as if my eyes were open to both the danger and the beauty of day-to-day life. I was also able to experience my favorite places and things in a whole new way. I enjoyed holidays more than I had before, and I couldn’t wait to travel to new places with my children. I had a new awareness and a new appreciation for things I never thought about before.
Saying yes to Christ also leads to transformation. Living as a Jesus-follower means we gain an eternal perspective. In Colossians 3:10, Paul talks about putting on a “new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” Paul isn’t talking about self improvement, being nice, or doing better. He is talking about a fundamental change, a completely new identity and purpose.
In this transformation, we turn away from sin and self-centered desires that keep us trapped in cycles of conflict with others. We can decide to accept the numerous gifts of the Holy Spirit, living every day rooted in love, joy, peace, and patience. Even when we are tired, hurt, rejected, or overwhelmed, God’s promises are still true. Like a child in a mother’s loving arms, we can feel the safety and assurance of God’s presence. And like a child cared for and loved by a parent, we have the opportunity to be completely known and truly loved by our Father. This relationship is transformational and open to every single person who accepts this invitation.
What a wonderful and completely undeserved gift we have in Jesus!
PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father,
I joyfully accept your invitation. You understand me; you have heard my prayers. You know me better than I know myself, and you see my faults. I ask for your presence and your comfort. Lord, I ask you to soften my heart to those around me, and allow me to see them as you see them. Open my heart and mind to you, and help me to see the world with new eyes. Make me new.
Amen.
